TRANSMEDIA: STORYTELLING IN THE DIGITAL AGE AND IT’S RELEVANCE TO CHILDRENS BOOKS
The digital age has had a
marked effect on traditional book sales. A new medium of transmedia
storytelling is evolving, mainly in the adult book and gaming world with
alternate reality games, novels, films and avatars. This will inevitably and eventually have
an impact on how children access stories, books and their characters in the
future and this is why publishers increasingly like their authors to have a
cyber presence through blogs, twitter, FaceBook and the like.
- “Transmedia storytelling (also known as
transmedia narrative or multiplatform storytelling) is the technique of
telling a single story or story experience across multiple platforms and
formats using current digital technologies” (1)
- “In order to achieve this engagement, a
transmedia production will develop stories across multiple forms of media
in order to deliver unique pieces of content in each channel. Importantly,
these pieces of content are not only linked together (overtly or subtly),
but are in narrative synchronization with each other. “(1)

media are cyber bridges, GPS games, QR codes or audio clues, moving a
reader from book to device relies on the transition being relevant to the
new platform, so that each medium excels at what it does best.” (2)
